Ms. Elizabeth (Liz) Hood, Director of Education, Toronto Botanical Garden, Toronto, Ontario. Liz will attend the prestigious International Diploma Course in Botanical Garden Education. This five-week course is offered by Botanic Gardens Conservation International and the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG), Kew. Ms. Hood is the recipient of one of a limited number of scholarships offered by Kew and is the first Canadian to receive the training.
Mr. Corey Scott Barnes, Education Coordinator and Nursery Manager, Quarryhill Botanical Garden, Glen Ellen, California. Corey will also attend the International Diploma Course in Botanical Garden Education, RBG, Kew in spring 2012. He plans to spend additional time at Kew's arboretum and to visit other gardens including RBG, Edinburgh.
Ms. Carrie Vesely Henderson, Development Director, Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Garden, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Carrie will participate in the Managing the Capital Campaign course at The Fund Raising School at The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, January, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She will also visit development directors at other public gardens.
Nicole Juday, Landscape Curator, The Wyck Association, Philadelphia, PA, participated in the recent Garden Writers Association annual symposium in Indianapolis. The Scholarship is helping Ms. Juday develop her writing and public relations skills. She is also learning how to create a photo database, optimize search engines, and how to use new technology as a garden writer.
Andrew Schmitz, Director of Horticulture and General Manager, The Brenton Arboretum, Dallas Center, IA, attended the Plant Exploration and Importation APGA Symposium at the Quarryhill Botanical Garden in Glen Ellen, CA. One of Mr. Schmitz's current projects is assembling the various genotypes of Gymnocladus dioicus.
Chad E. Washburn, Director of Conservation and Education, Naples Botanical Garden, Naples, FL, plans to attend the Getty Leadership Institute's Museum Leaders: The Next Generation in spring 2012. Mr. Washburn also will study mission-based programming at several gardens with collections focused on native flora.
Phyllis Odessey, Director of Horticulture, Randall's Island Park, New York, NY, will travel to the United Kingdom to study with meadow expert James Hitchmough, professor of horticultural ecology at Sheffield University. She will use the Scholarship to learn more about sustainable gardening in urban parks and will visit Sheffield Park, Wisley, and Nymans. Randall's Island serves the East Harlem and South Bronx communities.Andrew Hill, Curator of the David C. Lam Asian Garden at the University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, Vancouver, BC, Canada, used the Chanticleer Scholarship for an international garden research tour in spring 2011. He focused on Scotland, where the climate and collections are similar to that of Vancouver. The opportunity furthered Andy's study of plant collections and best management practices, and helped him improve the Garden's botanical collection, international connections, and his leadership skills.
Connie Cottingham, Public Relations and Special Events Coordinator at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia in Athens, pursued ideas to increase the garden's visitation and visibility. She attended meetings of the American Public Gardens Association and the Garden Writers Association, learning from speakers and garden events, as well as connecting with peers. Connie gathered techniques regarding public relations, increasing revenue and ways to establish the State Botanical Garden of Georgia as a destination for visitors. She also visited similar institutions to discuss programming and publicity ideas.
Tim Boland, Executive Director of the Polly Hill Arboretum, Martha's Vineyard, MA, participated in the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders offered through the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University. The program helped Tim understand how to integrate the arboretum's organizational mission with economic strategy, while providing extensive training in strategic planning and personnel management.
Zhanna Yermakov, Natural Areas Manager of the Chicago Park District, IL, utilized the Scholarship to attend Museum Leaders: The Next Generation offered by the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI), and pursued coursework at the Chicago Botanic Garden. These two academic programs support Zhanna's development in becoming a stronger leader in the field of public horticulture and enhance the skills she uses in her work with the Chicago Park District.

Friday Evenings
The garden is open Friday evenings until 8:00pm through August 31st. We welcome you to picnic throughout the garden on those evenings.
Early Openings
We are going to be opening the garden early for a few dates this season. On Thursday, July 19th and on Saturday, September 22 the garden will open at 8:00am.
