Job description:
The Plant Information Coordinator is responsible for plant information, plant records and maps, and plant records photography files. Chanticleer is a 47-acre garden in suburban Philadelphia with an annual visitation of over 40,000 and taxa of more than 5,000.
The individual ensures the efficient and effective operation of the garden by
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date institutional plants records
- Identifying plants
- Preparing public plant lists with appropriate maps and images of plants in bloom.
- Preparing and ordering plant display labels as needed.
She/he develops and implements plant records procedures, is responsible for all aspects of plant records and plant maps. Uses BGBase, BGMap and other relevant software and may oversee work of interns, volunteers, and employees assigned to Plant Records. Other duties include:
- Works with Horticulturists to insure records are up to date.
- Organizes, catalogues and maintains library collection of horticultural and related reference books. Orders books.
- Organizes, inventories, maintains library of nursery catalogues.
- Organizes, inventories and maintains garden maps in flat files for security and easy retrieval.
- Takes photographs of garden as needed for plant lists and record management. Maintains institutional photograph collection for plant lists.
- Leads occasional tours and teaches as necessary.
The individual must be able to successfully prioritize work and meet deadlines while juggling multiple tasks. This includes planning months in advance while responding to day-to-day demands. The individual should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, climb a ladder, stand and/or sit for up to eight hours per day, including at a computer screen. A valid driver's license is required.
The position is part-time (three days a week) and year-round. The Plant Information Coordinator will report to the Grounds Manager. Occasional weekends and holidays may be scheduled.
